Redfin is a tech-powered real estate company and runs the country’s #1 real estate brokerage site that helps people find a place to live with brokerage, rentals, lending, title insurance, and renovation services. Redfin’s goal in introducing a virtual assistant was to help house hunters get fast answers to questions about for-sale homes.

To address this challenge, Redfin first introduced an Ask a Question service, enabling consumers to ask Redfin team members questions about a home. Recognizing the potential to improve user experience based on engagement with this feature, Redfin developed Ask Redfin, an AI-powered virtual assistant that helps users quickly find information about listings, local market conditions, touring availability, and more.

Objectives of building an AI virtual assistant for real estate

Redfin’s objectives for implementing a custom virtual assistant were to:

  • Automate & accelerate response time: Implement an AI virtual assistant to quickly and accurately deliver listing information.

  • Overhaul the user experience: Transition from traditional text and phone calls to a modern, cross-platform, easy-to-deploy chat system with a custom AI virtual assistant.

The development of Ask Redfin commenced with basic chat functionalities set up during a hackathon week. This was quickly followed by a customization phase that lasted only the equivalent of 3 person-months to create the final chat implementation.
